Newton-Wellesley Hospital
Children's Emotional Healthlink is a project sponsored by Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Newton, Massachusetts. The hospital was founded in 1881 by a group of concerned citizens who felt their community should have access to local hospital care. The Cottage Hospital system was based on the British theory that country residents would be more likely to accept care in smaller hospitals built as cottages in each community.
During its 122-year history, Newton-Wellesley Hospital (NWH) has focused intensely on children. Following its first birth in 1890, with over 3,200 births in 2002, the hospital has continually expanded its services for children. In 2003, the hospital rang in the New Year with the opening of its Pediatric Emergency Center. In March 2003, it opened a new Pediatric Ambulatory Care Center. MassGeneral for Children, established in 2002, now offers subspecialty pediatrics practices in a variety of areas that include psychiatry, neurosurgery and speech and language.
In addition, since becoming a teaching affiliate of Tufts University School of Medicine in 1965, Newton-Wellesley has steadily attracted the best physicians in the region and expanded through the years to offer the latest technologies. Today, the hospital is Boston's western suburbs' most comprehensive medical center. In 2004, Newton-Wellesley was named by Solucient as one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals that has achieved a level of excellence in quality of care, efficiency of operations, financial performance and adaptation to the changing healthcare environment.
Joining the Partners HealthCare System in 1999, Newton-Wellesley meets the health care needs of hundreds of thousands in its community annually. Through the hospital's collaboration with Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital, Newton-Wellesley covers medicine, surgery, pediatrics, orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology, and many other specialties.
